The Magician's Nephew, by C.S. Lewis, is the first book in the reading order of the Chronicles of Narnia series. The story is about a boy, Digory, and a girl, Polly, who find themselves in eccentric Uncle Andrew's magic trap. They end up discovering the Other World, eventually finding Aslan creating the world of Narnia.
Very interesting back story to The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. We learn of the origin of the White Witch and how she ended up in Narnia. Before she gets to Narnia, she is actually let loose in the real world, which is quite entertaining.
