April 2011 Update

I'm back at Walt Morey for the 4th Quarter! I am excited that I get to finish the year with the students I started the year with. Please read my April update below.
Thanks!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As many of you may have already heard, I am back to finish up the school year as your student’s math/science teacher. It is an unfortunate and tragic life situation that Mrs. Kellogg and her husband are in. For those of you who have not heard, she decided to spend the rest of the year with her husband, whose cancer has not improved. Our thoughts and prayers are certainly with their family in this very difficult time.

Coming back is bittersweet for me, as it is tough to hear about the Kelloggs, but also I am happy and excited to be back teaching the same students I started the year with! I am looking forward to finishing the rest of the year with your child and want to encourage them to do their very best as they continue on to high school.

I have a few changes this quarter. I created a new list of rules for my classroom, which I call my “Riedl Rules.” This list is a wide variety of detailed rules that I expect your child to follow in my hopes to prepare them for high school, future jobs, and a career. One rule in particular many students have expressed displeasure for: Riedl Rule 16. I told the students that homework must be turned in or else they will get a lunch detention. If this becomes a habit, then it will turn into a note home to you and an after-school detention. My belief is that homework is essential in developing responsibility for meeting deadlines. I see school as their job, and if they do not fulfill their expectations as a student, then they will receive a consequence. Please feel free to view the entire list of Riedl Rules on my website [www.riedlteach.com] or you can ask your child for their copy.

I am looking forward to the last couple of months, as we are wrapping up the last few math units and finishing up the genetics unit in science. If you have any questions about the new Riedl Rules, student grades (report cards will be mailed out this week), or anything else at all, I would love to talk with you! Thanks so much!

Sincerely,

Mr. Riedl
