Tryon Creek State Park!

October 9 - 13, 2017

   Thanks so much to those parents who volunteered to drive and chaperone students on last Friday's field trip! We had a great time and great weather at Tryon Creek. MAP begins for 5th grade this week (details below), and there is also no school on Friday. Make it a great week, everyone!

Topics to Talk About at Home

Why is it important to participate in MAP testing? Measuring Academic Progress is helpful to me, as a teacher, but it is also beneficial to the students and parents as well. Why might that be? If you don't know, then we'll discuss it again on Monday morning!

Measuring Academic Progress (MAP)

Fall MAP is starting up this week for 5th grade. Just a reminder, MAP is the standardized testing used at West Hills to track student growth as they continually learn more. To ensure results that accurately reflect student knowledge, it is important that each student has plenty of rest, has a good breakfast and lunch, and does not have interruptions (i.e. doctor appointment) during the time of their tests. Let me know if you have any questions about the following schedule for our class:
   - Monday, October 9, 10:50-11:50
   - Tuesday, October 10, 10:50-11:50
   - Wednesday, October 11, 12:50-1:50
   - Thursday, October 12, 10:50-11:50

Field Trip: Neighborhood House (Group 1)

We will be going on our first trip to serve at Neighborhood House on Tuesday, October 24th! It will be a great opportunity to serve with our hands, donate our time to help our neighbors, and learn about the great things people are doing to help others in the city. We will be splitting the class into two groups, and only one group will go at a time. The second group will be going on November 7th. I haven't decided on the groups yet... it will likely be based on who returns the waivers to me the quickest. Please read the important information about Neighborhood House HERE, which includes the waiver you need to print and sign. If you don't have a working printer at home, let me know and I can print it at school and send it home. Feel free to let me know if you have additional questions!
