New student!
It is my pleasure to welcome a new student to our classroom, starting on Monday. His name is Christopher Crane. Let's be sure to give him, and his family, a warm welcome into the West Hills community!

Remember your Google Apps permission slips
On the last day of school before Christmas break, the students were given a small packet. It explains how the school is providing each student with their own secure Google account (with parent permission). This will be used only for academic purposes, since they cannot send or receive email from anyone outside of the whcs.org domain. In my classroom, I plan to use this for a variety of purposes (e.g., typing book reports, math practice website logins, sharing documents quickly and easily, etc.).

I have experience with student Google accounts (I used Google Apps for Education with the students at the school I taught at last year), so if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. If you misplaced the packet over the break, you can download another copy from our Computer Lab website. The forms to be signed and returned are titled "Student Acceptable Use Policy Agreement" and "Google Apps Parent Permission Form".

Report Cards
This is my first experience completing report cards at West Hills. As far as I know, the final report cards will be emailed out on Friday, January 11th. Thank you for being patient with me during this time, as this system for completing report cards is new for me. If you have questions or feedback for me, please let me know.

New Term!
January also marks the beginning of the second trimester, which will please many students (and parents) who have been trying to keep up with missing work. All students will be starting out this new term with a clean slate. As of now, none of the students have missing work! Let's be sure to encourage good study habits and keep academic work a priority in this new year.

Paternity leave when Delaney is born
The newest member of the Riedl family, Delaney Ruth, is expected to be born around January 19th. I am planning on taking about nine school days off for paternity leave, so the class will have a substitute during that time. Please understand that this could possibly be a last minute switch, due to the urgency of the birthing process. I have already starting working on lesson plans for the substitute, so let me know if there is anything specific I should explain to the substitute to help your child transition successfully during this time.
