Demonstrating knowledge on exams
May 1 - 5, 2017

Congratulations to all of those who worked hard on the Lion King musical! It was such a wonderful performance, and I'm so glad I was able to experience it. In other news regarding Neighborhood House, we will not have any other trips to volunteer this year. Jimmy, the volunteer coordinator, had his last day at Neighborhood House last Friday. He is moving to the east coast, and because of his absence, we will not be able to schedule another time to serve. I am glad we were able to go multiple times earlier this year, though! Make it a great week, everyone!

Topics to Talk About at Home

On Friday, the students picked topics for their Middle Ages Research Paper! The students are only allowed to check out one book about their topic from the school library, so please discuss ideas for where to find other books (i.e., public library, book store, etc.) in order to research facts and information. More details can be found in the purple info packet, which should be in student binders or accordion folders. Only about half of the students got a parent signature. :-(  Did your child forget to ask you to sign their purple packet???

Measuring Academic Progress (MAP)

Spring MAP begins in a few weeks. Just a reminder, MAP is the standardized testing used at West Hills to track student growth as they continually learn more. To ensure results that accurately reflect student knowledge, it is important that each student has plenty of rest, has a good breakfast and lunch, and does not have interruptions (i.e. doctor appointment) during the time of their tests. Let me know if you have any questions about the following schedule for our class:
   - Monday, May 15th, 2:00-3:00pm
   - Tuesday, May 16th, 2:10-3:00pm
   - Wednesday, May 17th, 2:00-3:00pm
   - Thursday, May 18th, 2:10-3:00pm

Woof

Woof, by Spencer Quinn, is the first book in the Bowser and Birdie series. This is a great book for dog lovers. The great thing is that even though I'm not a dog lover, I still love this book. This book is hilarious all because of the fact that it is from the dog's point of view. His short attention span, much like a typical dog, leads to many laughs throughout the story.

The main reason I loved this book is because the author did such a good job putting the reader inside the mind of the main character, Bowser, who is a Bernese/poodle/shepherd mutt. He just got adopted by a new owner, Birdie, an 11-year-old girl. She lives with her grandmother in Louisiana and are dealing with a local mystery. Bowser is integral in solving the mystery because he notices things that humans often overlook. The author captures the essence of what makes dogs wonderful and how they see the world differently than we do.

I also learned a lot about the deep south, like what it's like living by a bayou and the different culture down there. I'm excited to read the other books in the series, if not just for hearing Bowser be the silly dog that he is, but also because of the exciting story. This book was off the charts!

Cupcake Geology
April 3 - 7, 2017

Welcome back from Spring Break! The Rock Collections Lab Project is due on Tuesday, and I'm looking forward to having the students identify some fascinating specimens. Make it a great week, everyone!

Person of the Week

Sam Armour!

Topics to Talk About at Home

Did your child tell you about Cupcake Geology in Science Lab the week before Spring Break? It was a great time of making predictions of what we thought was below the surface (icing) of the cupcake by "drilling" core samples with straws. It's always a fun lab that was made with love by our very own Mrs. Swain!

Science: Rock Collections Lab

Our science lab instructor, Mrs. Swain, assigned the students a Rock Collection Project, which is due on the morning of Tuesday, April 4th. Each student should collect at least 8 different rocks or minerals in order to identify them. The students must NOT know the type of rock or mineral collected (it would defeat the purpose of attempting to identify it in Science Lab). Please use an ordinary egg carton to collect them, numbering the carton spots #1-8 for the rocks or minerals to be placed in. If anyone has extra egg cartons at their house, please bring them in for students who do not have one to use for collecting. This has already been explained to the students in class. Thank you, and please direct any questions to Mr. Riedl or Mrs. Swain.
